Hair Club for Babies

I knew Barrett's hair was starting to fall out (in tiny little clumps sometimes) but I hadn't really realized HOW MUCH it was until I started organizing my pictures of him on my laptop. I was going back through and it is a pretty big difference!

Brand-new baby, snuggled up on daddy's chest, with a full head of hair.

Six weeks old, still going strong...

3 months old, with cousin Jen, starting to thin out around the back...

Almost 4 months, hair is pretty much gone...

Now at 4 months, peach fuzz is starting to grow in.

Sort-of Sitting Up

Tori is letting us borrow baby Cole's Bumbo seat~ The seat has high sides that give the baby support and help strengthen his torso muscles. It's pretty cool because it teaches the baby how to sit up. Barrett seems to like it and he looks like a big boy "sitting up" in the seat.

Off the Charts!

I took Barrett to the pediatrician yesterday ~ while we were there, I asked the nurse to measure him. They had been weighing him regularly during sick visits to make sure he wasn't losing too much weight, but they hadn't measured his length in a while. He is 26.5 inches! Officially off the percentile chart!!

Wow! (surprised expression)

95% is 25.75 inches, so I guess 26.5 inches is 105% -- does that even exist? Not sure. Anyway, I'm so proud. I guess being a giraffe for Halloween was an omen. To celebrate his super-tall status, I washed his clothes in the next size up so they will be ready for him. He can't straighten his legs all the way in his 3-6m footie pajamas, so it's time to move up!

Third Time is the Charm

Barrett has finally turned the corner and is starting to get over his pneumonia! He got his third shot today and seems to be feeling much better. It looks like he's going to come out of it no worse for the wear, although he has lost a lot of hair. (pediatrician says that is just a coincidence).
Thanks so much to everyone for their thoughts and prayers!

He was pretty interested in the baby in the mirror in the pediatrician's exam room

At least he got a cool Wile E. Coyote bandaid

I'm Going to Need a Spreadsheet for This

Baby Barrett has an ear infection too! Oh no! This means more medicine, in addition to his heart medicines and cold remedies, that he takes at all different times. The main problem is that he coughs, coughs, and coughs, until he finally vomits. The vomiting makes his heart rate spike (200+ bpm) and presents a problem with him keeping his heart medicines down. BUT, he can't take any cough medicine to stop the cough (and eventual vomiting) because they contain stimulants that would trigger his heart. Tricky business. So, the doctors say to try OTC Delsym for now. If that doesn't work, codine (!).
In a nutshell, there are 5 different oral meds amounting to 14 doses daily. Whew. Talk about needing a spreadsheet to stay organized...
Kristopher is at the pharmacy picking up even MORE rx right now.

UPDATE: Barrett had chest x-rays this morning and he has PNEUMONIA. Poor little guy. This would explain why he seems to be getting worse and not better.

Sniffles, Coughs, and Sneezes

Poor baby has a cold. I know, I know, all kids get colds, but he seems especially pitiful to me. Of course I am not an objective party. Anyway, the pediatrician says he should be feeling better soon and I'll bring him back in a few days just to check. In the meantime, I'm slathering on the baby vick's rub, running the humidifier, and obsessively checking his temperature and heart rate (a bad cough could set off his heart).
Funny thing is that he doesn't seemed bothered by it at all~ Does this look like a sick baby to you??

Heart Check Up

Barrett went to the cardiologist this morning~ I always look forward to these appointments as a chance to get him all checked out and learn more information. Honestly, these visits also make me nervous as I start to think if/when the SVT will come back and the inevitable scary time when Barrett is taken off the medicines completely. He can't be on the meds forever because of bad side effects. So, the doctor will start to wean him off when Barrett is one year old -- SVT breakthroughs are more likely when the medicines are reduced (cringe). Anyway, one day at a time, right?

The doctor hooked Barrett up to a spiffy heart monitor that continuously monitors his heart rate for 24h and digitally records it into a little box. We bring the monitor back tomorrow, they download the info and evaluate it to see if he's having irregular rythmns or secretly going into SVT in the middle of the night (or anytime I don't happen to have a stethoscope to his chest). Yes, his SVT is sneaky like that... Fingers crossed for a good report.

Regardless of my worries, Barrett is becoming a pro with all the hoopla.

EKG? No problem.

Heart monitor? No problem.

Although there is a SLIGHT problem trying to figure out the warmest thing for him to wear when 1) it is COLD outside and 2) footie pjs are out because of all the cords and monitor. Hm.

UPDATE: We got the results from the heart monitor ~~~ SVT-free!! Alright!

Happy Moo Year

Kristopher has been dying to go hunting ever since the season opened. So, we ended up spending New Years in Woodville so he could get in some QT with the great outdoors. As always, it was a blast~ We spent some time with Kristopher's brother and at the Hurst's. The Hursts have a cattle farm with lots of land to hunt and cows and horses, the whole shebang.

LOTS of cows

Barrett liked the hunting trip (well, we stayed inside the camp, but he seemed to like that)

Somehow, Kristopher's boots get muddier than Barrett's

Mama cow and brand-new baby calf. The picture is a little fuzzy because I didn't have much time. Notice the lack of fence between me and protective mama cow. She started making menacing moo sounds and I was out of there.

Happy New Year! Already looking sleepy on about 8p. I wish I could say we made it til midnight, but we didn't...

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

Ahhh, Christmas was great~ We visited with Klar family in Baton Rouge and Hall family in Birmingham and everyone had a fun time. The only bummer about Christmas Day is that it means the holidays are over. And importantly, Christmas music is over...seriously, I can't believe they cut it off cold turkey on the 26th. I need to be weaned off more gently.
Barrett went with us to Christmas Eve church service and was good through the whole thing. He even went up to the alter with me and Kristopher to take communion, which I loved.

Barrett, first thing on Christmas morning. He really likes this playmat that my mom set up for him in Birmingham. Thinking about getting him one for Baton Rouge...
